The Double Portion
The Journey of Faith: Lessons from Elisha’s Call to Ministry
When God calls us to follow Him, are we willing to go all in? Through the story of Elisha’s calling and journey into prophetic ministry, we learn powerful lessons about wholehearted devotion and spiritual growth.
What Does It Mean to Be “All In” for God?
Elisha demonstrated what it means to be fully committed to God’s calling. As a successful farmer with 12 pairs of oxen (a sign of prosperity in those times), he could have hesitated when Elijah called him to service. Instead, he immediately sacrificed his livelihood and security to follow God’s path.
What Are the Stages of Spiritual Growth?
Elisha’s journey took him through four significant locations, each representing different stages of spiritual maturity:
- Gilgal – The danger of settling for religious routine
- Bethel – Moving beyond just “going to church”
- Jericho – Engaging in spiritual warfare
- Jordan – Stepping into supernatural ministry
Why Do We Need God’s Spirit?
At the Jordan, Elisha asked for a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit. This wasn’t about seeking more power or fame – it was a recognition that he couldn’t fulfill God’s calling through his own strength. He needed supernatural empowerment through God’s Spirit.
How Does God Work Through His People Today?
Just as God worked through Elisha with signs and wonders, He continues to work through His church today:
- Physical, emotional, and spiritual healing
- Reconciliation and unity
- Community transformation
- Lives changed and renewed
Life Application
Consider these questions this week:
- Where am I in my spiritual journey – Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, or Jordan?
- Am I settling for religious routine or pursuing deeper relationship with God?
- What areas of my life need to be fully surrendered to God’s calling?
Challenge: Choose one area where you’ve been holding back from full commitment to God. Take a concrete step this week to surrender that area to Him, whether it’s your time, resources, relationships, or future plans.
Remember: God’s Spirit is still at work today, and He wants to work through you to impact others. Don’t settle for less than His full calling on your life.
