Are You Ready? Living with an Advent Attitude in the Last Days

As we enter the season of Advent, many of us naturally turn our thoughts to the warmth and nostalgia of Christmas. We think about decorations, gifts, and family gatherings. But the first Sunday of Advent calls us to something deeper, to consider not just Christ's first coming, but His promised return.

Why Does Advent Begin with the Second Coming?

You might wonder why we start this beautiful season talking about the end times rather than diving straight into Christmas carols. The truth is, Christ's first and second coming belong together. If we believe the wonder that God became flesh in Bethlehem, then anticipating His second coming is not much of a stretch. One coming of God demands another.

The promise of that first Advent insists on it. Clearly, God is not finished yet. The nations have not beaten their swords into plowshares. The candles of Christmas have been blown out by war. We need the hope that something better is coming.

What Did Jesus Say About His Return?

In Matthew 24:36-44, Jesus gives clear teaching about His second coming. He tells us that just as no one knew when the flood would come in Noah's day, no one knows the exact time of His return, not even the angels. Only the Father knows.

Jesus uses everyday examples to illustrate His point. Two people working in a field, one taken, one left. Two women grinding grain, one taken, one left. The message is clear. His return will happen during ordinary life, when people least expect it.

The Signs Jesus Mentioned

Jesus described various signs that would precede His coming:

  • False prophets
  • Wars and revolutions
  • Earthquakes and famines
  • Pestilence
  • Persecution of believers
  • Signs involving the moon and stars

Do any of these sound familiar in our current world?

What Does It Mean to Live in the "Days of Noah"?

Jesus compared the time before His return to the days of Noah. People were living normal lives, eating, drinking, marrying, right up until the flood came. They were not necessarily doing evil things. They were simply caught up in everyday life and not paying attention to God's warnings.

This is our challenge today. Life seems normal on the surface. Christians go to work, send kids to school, worry about tests, injuries, and retirement accounts. But Jesus calls us to live with an Advent attitude, seeing beyond the normal to the deeper spiritual realities of these last days.

How Should We Prepare Our Hearts?

Being ready for Christ's return is not about scanning the sky. It is about living faithfully for the Lord every day. This means:

  • Nurturing ourselves and our children in faith
  • Loving and helping neighbors in need
  • Using our skills and talents for God's kingdom
  • Avoiding the trap of pursuing the good life while neglecting the eternal

The Wake-Up Call

Jesus warns against letting our hearts be weighed down with dissipation, excessive indulgence or wasting time on what does not matter. It is easy to fall into a sleepy life, getting busy with our own dreams while hitting the snooze button on God's call to watchfulness.

What About the Stress of the Season?

During Advent, we often get caught up in exterior signs, greeting cards, decorations, shopping, parties. These are not wrong, but they can distract us from preparing our hearts. Jesus reminds us that heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will never pass away.

Our hope is not in a holiday season or making the best Christmas ever. Our hope is anchored in the promise of Christ's return, when He will set all things right.

Living as People of Hope

Christ calls us to be people of hope, living with anticipation. This does not mean neglecting our responsibilities, but approaching them with an eternal perspective. We are called to bring heaven's values to earth right now, pointing people to the hope of the dawning day of the Lord.

This means:

  • Practicing Matthew 25 by seeing Christ in those who are hurting
  • Being a light in the darkness
  • Praying earnestly, "Your kingdom come"
  • Preparing ourselves and helping others prepare for the King's coming

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to live with a true Advent attitude. Instead of getting caught up only in external preparations, focus on preparing your heart for Christ's return.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I living as someone who truly believes Jesus is coming back?
  • How can I bring heaven's values into my interactions this week?
  • What snooze buttons have I been hitting when it comes to God's call on my life?
  • How can I be a light in the darkness for someone who needs hope?

Remember, we are not waiting passively for Christ's return. We are actively preparing the world for His coming kingdom. Live this week as someone whose hope goes beyond routine and whose heart is truly ready for the King.
