The Wonder of Christmas: God's Gift of Peace and Salvation

Christmas is a time of wonder, a season when we celebrate the most extraordinary gift ever given to humanity. The story of Christ's birth continues to captivate hearts and transform lives, reminding us that God's love knows no bounds.

What Makes Christmas Truly Wonderful?

The angel's proclamation to the shepherds captures the essence of Christmas: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ, the Lord."

This message contains three profound truths that should fill us with awe and wonder.

He Came Specifically for You

The angel's words "unto you a Savior is born" were not just meant for the shepherds. They are meant for each of us personally. God's love is not generic or distant. It is intimate and individual. As John 3:16 reminds us, God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son.

The infinite God became an infant. The eternal One entered time. The all powerful God became vulnerable. Why? Because of His tremendous love for you. This gift has your name on it.

God Moved Into Our Neighborhood

The incarnation represents God's decision to move into our world, to experience our struggles, and to meet us where we are. This is not a distant deity observing from afar. This is Emmanuel, God with us.

When we feel alone or abandoned, when fears about tomorrow overwhelm us, the Christmas message declares, "Do not be afraid." God promises never to leave us or forsake us. As Paul writes, if God is for us, who can be against us?

Why Did God Choose the Shepherds?

The Least Likely Recipients

The shepherds were society's outcasts. They were marginalized nomads whose testimony was not accepted in court. They were considered ritually unclean and barred from synagogue worship. Yet God chose them to receive the greatest announcement in human history.

This choice reveals something beautiful about God's character. He does not come to the powerful or prestigious first. He comes to the least of these, the forgotten, and the overlooked. The knowledge of God is not reserved for intellectuals or the seemingly deserving. It is all about grace.

What We Need Saving From

We might think we need saving from our circumstances, difficult people, or external problems. But ultimately, Christ came to save us from ourselves. The problem is not just out there. It is within us.

We are born with a condition called sin, and at its heart is the letter I. We want to become our own little gods and disconnect from our Creator. This separation causes worry, anxiety, confusion, and emptiness that we see both personally and globally.

What Does True Peace Look Like?

Peace Beyond Circumstances

The angels proclaimed peace on earth, but this is not merely the absence of conflict. It is a deep, abiding peace that comes from being reconciled to God. In thousands of years of recorded history, humanity has experienced countless wars. Clearly, we are not naturally good at peace.

True peace begins with peace with God, which then flows into our relationships with others. It is the kind of peace that remains steady when storms beat down our dreams, when relationships crumble, or when pain attacks our bodies.

Becoming Peacemakers

Jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Like the shepherds who could not keep the good news to themselves, we are called to pass this peace along to others.

Sometimes this is costly. It may require forgiveness or asking for forgiveness. But this is how God's peace spreads throughout the world.

The Gift That Never Breaks

What God Offers in Exchange

This Christmas gift from God is unlike any other. It never grows old, never breaks, and never loses its value. Through Christ, God offers to:

  • Replace frustration with peace
  • Remove guilt with forgiveness
  • Replace worry with confidence
  • Replace despair with hope
  • Replace emptiness with meaning

Freedom That Lasts

Christ offers freedom from guilt over the past, freedom from living up to others' expectations, and freedom from habits that imprison us in hopelessness. This is not temporary relief. It is lasting transformation.

How Should We Respond to This Wonder?

Treasure and Ponder

Like Mary, who treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart, we should take time to marvel at what God has done. Wonder has the power to change us, making us more reverent and more caring toward others.

Share the Good News

The shepherds did not keep their experience to themselves. After encountering Christ, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child. Wonder is contagious. When we truly grasp the magnitude of God's gift, we cannot help but share it.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to rediscover the wonder of Christmas. In our technology saturated world, we may become jaded to miracles, but the incarnation remains the most astounding event in human history.

Take time each day to treasure and ponder what it means that God became human for you personally. Let this truth replace any fears you are carrying with the peace that comes from knowing God is with you.

Then, like the shepherds, look for opportunities to share this good news with others, not through grand gestures, but through the peace and joy that flows from your life when you truly understand that you are deeply loved by God.

Questions for Reflection:

  • When was the last time you were truly filled with awe and wonder at God's love for you?
  • What fears or worries do you need to surrender to the God who promises, do not be afraid?
  • How can you be a peacemaker in your relationships this week?
  • Who in your life needs to hear the good news that God loves them personally and intimately?
