Let The Stone Preach
Let The Stone Preach: Understanding the Present Reality of Resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus Christ isn't just a historical event we celebrate once a year—it's a present reality that transforms how we live today. While many focus on the past victory of Easter or the future hope of heaven, there's something powerful happening right now in the lives of believers.
What Really Happened at the Empty Tomb?
The Gospel of Mark gives us a surprisingly honest account of that first Easter morning. When Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome arrived at the tomb, they weren't expecting a resurrection. They came with spices to anoint a dead body, worried about the practical problem of who would roll away the heavy stone.
“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, ‘Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?’” — Mark 16:1–3
But when they arrived, the stone was already moved. A young man in white told them the earth-shaking news:
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” — Mark 16:6
Why Were the Women Afraid?
“Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.” — Mark 16:8
This wasn't the triumphant celebration we might expect. These women were confused and frightened. They didn't understand what had happened. This honest portrayal actually strengthens the credibility of the account—real people experiencing something beyond their comprehension.
What Does the Rolled-Away Stone Teach Us?
The stone that sealed Jesus' tomb has three powerful messages for us today.
The Stone Preaches Hope
The stone represents humanity's greatest problem: the barrier between us and God created by sin and death. No human effort could roll away this stone of divine judgment. Only God himself could remove it.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.” — 1 Peter 1:3–4
The Greek word for hope (elpis) appears only once in the Gospels before Jesus' resurrection, but seventy times after. This isn't wishful thinking—it's a guaranteed promise based on God's unbreakable word.
The Stone Preaches Victory
The empty tomb declares that death has been defeated. Jesus didn't just survive death; he conquered it completely. The carefully folded grave clothes were like a message: “I'm coming back.”
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” — Colossians 3:1–3
Notice the past tense: “you have been raised.” This isn't just about the future—it's about our present reality. We are already living in resurrection power.
The Stone Preaches a Sure Foundation
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Without the resurrection, our faith would be meaningless. But because Christ rose, we have an unshakeable foundation for life.
How Does Resurrection Power Work Today?
The resurrection isn't just about going to heaven someday. It's about bringing heaven's values to earth right now. We are part of a movement, not just an institution.
We Are New Creations
The “first day of the week” mentioned in Mark represents more than just Sunday—it symbolizes God's new creation. Because of the resurrection, we are new creations called to live differently in this world.
The King Is on the Move
“But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” — Mark 16:7
Notice that Peter was specifically mentioned. Despite his denial of Jesus, he wasn't forgotten. The risen Christ was already moving ahead, preparing to restore and commission his followers.
What Does This Mean for How We Live?
“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:58
Our work matters because we serve a risen King. We're called to:
- Plant seeds of hope, justice, and mercy
- Build bridges in our communities
- Care for God's creation
- Support those who are struggling
- Bring heaven's values to earth
Life Application
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not just a historical fact to believe—it's a present reality to live. This week, challenge yourself to live as someone who truly believes that death has been defeated and that you have been raised with Christ.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I living with the unshakeable hope that comes from knowing Christ has conquered death?
- How can I bring heaven's values of love, justice, and mercy into my daily interactions?
- What “stones” in my life need to be rolled away by God's power?
- Am I representing Christ as a “little Christ” in my community?
The stone has been rolled away. The tomb is empty. The King is on the move. The question is: Will you join the movement and live in the power of the resurrection today?
