Shalom’s Vision Statement

We are Shalom,
a community being brought together by God
and empowered by the Holy Spirit,
inviting everyone to
CULTIVATE a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ,
CELEBRATE in worship,
CARE for and encourage each other, and
COMMUNICATE Christ to the world.`

Shalom’s People

Presently Shalom has around 172 families with 650 people.  It is a young, growing, and dynamic congregation. Over one-third of the congregation is High School age or younger.   Eighty percent of the adult members have had some college or are college or post-college graduates.  Many members come from Christian Reformed Churches in Northwest Iowa, Southwest Minnesota, and Central South Dakota. We also have a sizable number of people from non-CRC background.

Shalom’s History and Future

Shalom became an organized church in 1978 with 26 families.  Through God’s blessing Shalom has grown to 152 families.  This dynamic growth allowed us to erect an attractive fellowship hall and worship center during these years.  In our history we have had three pastors:  Pastor John Van Regennmorter (1979- 1988), Pastor Ralph Bronkema (1988 – 1995), Pastor Charlie De Ridder (1995 – 2005), Pastor Eric Verhulst (2007 - present).
We have recently completed a five-year plan intent on bringing glory to God, equipping believers and welcoming seekers.

Shalom’s Building

Shalom is located on the corner of 49th Street and Southeastern Ave. The area is a newly developed single-family dwelling neighborhood, with a library, elementary school, park and swimming pool located in the immediate area.
The worship center, built in 1990, is a magnificent, hexagonal shaped facility that seats over 600 people and is furnished with state of the art audiovisual equipment. The finished basement includes a fireside room and classrooms.  With a narthex between, a large fellowship hall extends off the worship center. Classrooms, nurseries, and a kitchen surround the fellowship hall.

Shalom’s Core Values

  • The Bible is the foundation upon which we build.
  • Prayer is a present and effective part of every believer’s life and the church’s ministry.
  • Lost people matter to God and to God’s people.
  • Worship is an encounter with God.
  • Believers are called to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
  • Christians live together in fellowship where they are accountable to one another and are easily moved by the Holy Spirit to share God’s love.
  • Ministry is the calling of every believer.
  • Children are a heritage from the Lord and must be loved, taught and equipped for service.
  • Stewardship is a way of living and a way of giving.

Christian Reformed Background

The Christian Reformed Church is a denomination that has about 300,000 members in 1,000 congregations across the United States and Canada.

    We call ourselves:
Christian because we belong to Jesus Christ and want to be his followers. We recognize as fellow-Christians all people who accept the teachings of the Bible as summarized in the Apostle’s Creed.

Reformed because we're part of that historic branch of the Christian church that follows the teachings of 16th-century reformer John Calvin, who struggled to return Christianity to its biblical roots.

Church because God has called us to be a fellowship of his people in the world.

We often call ourselves "the CRC" for short.
